Book club chat mishap: are you the black sheep?
When your audience isn't buying, get creative, not louder.
My wonderful mother (of a generation that rhymes with ‘zoomer’) was having technical difficulties with her book club’s group chat.
“Why are my messages showing up black while everyone else’s are a pretty purple?!” she asked with dismay.
I glanced at her phone and told her that someone had changed the colour theme.
She didn’t understand.
“But only *my* messages are black! Everyone else’s are purple. Why am I the black sheep of the chat?” 🐑
I repeated my exact words: someone had changed the colour theme.
When she bemoaned a third time about being the only person in the chat with black messages, I said once again (but significantly louder): “Someone changed the colour theme.”
She looked at me and spoke the truest words of wisdom that instantly sparked the idea for today’s post:
“Saying it louder won’t make me understand!”
(She was right. So, I showed her how Messenger themes work using examples from her other convos. It finally sunk in that she wasn’t a black sheep – everyone’s sent messages in the book club chat appeared black on their phones. 😉)
Why this matters if you’re growing a business:
If kindred clients aren’t buying from you, perhaps they don’t understand the message you’re (loudly) repeating.
Get more creative with how you show your value to them:
✅ Empathize with their challenges and create compelling problem-aware content that positions you + your offerings as the clear solution.
✅ Share unique perspectives that challenge them to think differently about the problems you help them solve.
✅ Use stories, analogies, and specific examples to illustrate the concepts you teach them inside your free + paid offers, to deepen their understanding and stick in their minds.
Don’t fall into the trap of repeating the same watery, basic, or unclear words over and over (or louder and louder) assuming that your people already understand what you’re trying to say.
Audit your messaging using the checklist above to create more compelling (and highly converting) content.
Til next week, xo
